There’s a lot of force feedback, and the wheel will spin if you get hung up or drive off the road. “Dirt 4” is best played with a driving wheel controller, which you have to grip hard and yank all sorts of ways to stay on course. Circuit racing games are all about smooth inputs to all the controls.
And that goes for all the forms of racing, including current and classic rally, Rallycross and LandRush, which is like stadium truck racing. Choose wisely.īut what really makes this game fun is the frantic pace.
You also have to hire a crew - some characters are more expensive with more skill, some less. There are loads of options for difficulty and driver-assistance systems, but those all change up your bonus money at the end of the race. Crashes and rollovers, a common experience, look real enough to make you wince, though one of my gripes is that the navigator doesn’t react. The damage and dirt rendering is good too, with options to repair your car, at a cost, between races. Still, the backgrounds, the smoothness, the cars and especially the night racing all look great. I’m also using the standard PlayStation 4 and not the new PS Pro, which has more graphical and processing power.

She - it was a she in my game - also notes when to cut a corner or not. If it’s a high number, “left 6,” that means you don’t really need to slow down “right 2” on the other hand, get ready for the hand brake.
